Dr. Oleksiy Kondratyev, Quantitative Research & Development Lead, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA)

Oleksiy Kondratyev is a Quantitative Research & Development Lead at Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) and a Visiting Professor at Department of Mathematics, Imperial College London. Oleksiy has over 20 years of quant finance industry experience and has been recognized as Quant of the Year (2019) by Risk magazine for the research on application of machine learning techniques to the risk factor analysis and portfolio optimisation. Oleksiy holds MSc in Theoretical Physics from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and PhD in Mathematical Physics from the Institute for Mathematics, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

How Quantum Should Change the Way We Think About Finance

As banks and financial firms prepare themselves for the quantum future, the emphasis has been on how quantum computers will speed up calculations and impact areas such as security. In this picture, quantum finance will be just like classical finance, only much faster. However the fields of economics and finance grew up in the era of classical computing, with its yes/no, 0 or 1 logic. The neoclassical economist William Stanley Jevons designed a “logic piano”; Von Neumann invented game theory but also the programmable computer; the Black-Scholes option-pricing algorithm first took off in part because it was available on a Texas Instruments calculator. Will quantum computers have a similarly galvanizing effect? In this session, David Orrell asks three experts how quantum ideas will change the way we think about quantitative finance.

Professor Andrew Sheng, Chief Advisor, China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission

Andrew Sheng is a former central banker and financial regulator in Asia and a commentator on global finance. He is Pro-Chancellor of Bristol University and Distinguished Fellow, Asia Global Institute, University of Hong Kong, as well as Chairman, George Town Institute of Open and Advanced Studies, Wawasan Open University, Malaysia.
Andrew is the Chief Adviser to the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission, a member of the international advisory council of the China Investment Corporation, the China Development Bank, and China Securities Regulatory Commission.
Andrew served as Chairman of the Securities and Futures Commission of Hong Kong from 1998 to 2005, having previously been a central banker with the Hong Kong Monetary Authority and Bank Negara Malaysia. He also worked with the World Bank from 1989 to 1993. From 2003 to 2005, he chaired the Technical Committee of the International Organisation of Securities Commissions (IOSCO). He was a Board Member of Khazanah Nasional Berhad, the sovereign wealth fund of Malaysia.
He has a First Class Honours in Economics from Bristol University, and Honorary Doctorates from University of Bristol and University of Malaya. He is an Adjunct Professor at the Graduate School of Economics and Management, Tsinghua University, Beijing and Faculty of Economics, University of Malaya.
He is author of 'From Asian to Global Financial Crisis: An Asian Regulator’s View of Unfettered Finance in the 1990s and 2000s' (2009), and co-editor (with Ng Chow Soon) of the book, 'Bringing Shadow Banking into the Light: Opportunity for Financial Reform in China' (2015). He writes regularly on international finance and monetary economics, financial regulation and global governance for Project Syndicate, AsiaNewsNet and leading economic magazines and newspapers in China and Asia. In April 2013, Andrew was named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. He also appeared in the Oscar-winning film 'Inside Job' in 2011.

Quantum Technologies: A Global Understanding of the Opportunities Landscape

In this talk I will provide an overview of the current quantum ecosystem and its funding landscape. I will then follow with opportunities in different businesses, and especially in the financial sector.

Dr. Araceli Venegas-Gomez, Founder and CEO, QURECA Ltd.

Dr. Araceli Venegas-Gomez spent several years working for Airbus in Germany and France as an aerospace engineer, before falling in love with quantum mechanics. She then decided to follow her passion for physics, and moved to Scotland to pursue a PhD in quantum simulation at the University of Strathclyde. Following discussions with the different quantum stakeholders she had over the last years, Araceli identified the need to bridge the gap between businesses and academia, as well as to raise the quantum awareness to the general public. Continuing her work on outreach advocating quantum technologies, she was named the “quantum ambassador”, after winning the Optical Society Milton and Rosalind Chang Pivoting fellowship in 2019. Araceli founded her own company called QURECA (Quantum Resources and Careers) to create a link between the different stakeholders in the quantum community through a common language, and to generate global opportunities with quantum technologies. QURECA provides a range of professional services, business development, and the solution to the quantum workforce skills bottleneck: the first online platform for quantum training and resourcing, to support individuals and businesses to be part of the quantum revolution.

Benefits of quantum-computing are expected to materialize only once error-corrected machines are available. In this talk we will share hands-on insights on the utility of currently available non-error corrected hardware with results that we realized in our quantum-computing projects.

Financial Applications of Quantum Computing

Quantum computing is an emerging technology with potential to transform many financial computations. This talk will cover why quantum computing is important, the basic quantum computing concepts, and highlight possible applications within the financial industry. It will also discuss steps which financial institutions can take to become quantum ready.

Dr. David Garvin, Head of Applications, Quantum Finance, Rigetti Computing

David focusses on researching, developing and implementing financial industry applications of quantum computing. He works at Rigetti, a full stack quantum computing hardware manufacturer and at QxBranch, a quantum applications company.
David has over 20 years experience as a Front-Office Quant in the Finance Industry. Previously, he has been the Global Head of Quantitative Analysis at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. Prior to that, he was a Director at Deutsche Bank and a Quant Analyst at Morgan Grenfell. He has covered all asset classes and been involved in management, modelling, risk and analytics, derivatives and structured products, machine learning and electronic trading.
David holds a PhD in Artificial Intelligence from Cambridge University and an MBA (Exec) from the Australian Graduate School of Management. He has authored articles in finance, physics, engineering, classical computing and quantum computing.

Let’s Do Quantum Economics!

Economics and finance have always been influenced by developments in computing, and changing from bits to qubits will do much more than speed up our calculations. This talk takes a hands-on approach to quantum economics, by showing how simple circuits of the sort used in quantum computers can be used to model everything from money creation, to decision-making, to option pricing.

The financial industry is one of the first sectors where useful use cases of quantum computing were identified. Some examples of Multiverse’s work in this area are quantum simulation of cryptocurrency market, quantum portfolio optimization and quantum portfolio value forecasting. And these works are examples of something that goes beyond an organization's technical skills and expertise. These works are examples of organizations which are able to think about quantum technologies in strategic terms, that is, organizations which are able to formulate a strategy for quantum technologies.

Esperanza Cuenca-Gómez is Head of Strategy and Outreach at Multiverse Computing. She is a digital transformation enthusiast with more than 10 years of experience in consumer finance and banking, and more than 5 years in strategy and operations consulting. Quantum mechanics has always fascinated Esperanza, so she decided to study and research in quantum computing and communications. As an engineer, Esperanza sees applied science and engineering as ways to build new technologies, solve problems, and contribute to society. Esperanza also serves as Head of Change Navigation at the Quantum Strategy Institute.

The Algorithms Bottleneck

Quantum computing has the potential to transform how we approach hard computational problems. Quantum computer systems capable of outperforming conventional computer clusters for problems in quantitative finance have not yet arrived, but are at least now on the horizon. While the lack of capable hardware represents one barrier to useful quantum computing, we are also faced with another barrier: the difficulty of constructing algorithms to actually harness quantum processors for a given task. This talk will discuss quantum algorithms development and the barriers to developing quantum-accelerated applications, and work at Horizon Quantum Computing to develop abstraction layers to allow domain experts to more easily harness quantum processing for diverse workloads.

Driven by the vision of quantum computing as a revolution in computing technology, Joe quit his tenured faculty position to found Horizon Quantum Computing in 2018. Drawing on over 18 years’ experience in quantum computing and computational complexity theory, today he fully dedicates his time to Horizon with the goal of making quantum computing a general-purpose computing technology capable of addressing some of the world’s most challenging computational problems.
Joe received a BSc in Theoretical Physics from University College Dublin and a DPhil from Oxford, where he went on to become a fellow of Merton College. Prior to founding Horizon, he led the Quantum Information and Theory group at Singapore University of Technology and Design, where he was a tenured associate professor, and was a principal investigator at the Centre for Quantum Technologies. He has published at the highest levels in both theoretical computer science (FOCS, STOC, CCC, ITCS) and physics (Science, Nature Physics, Physical Review Letters, Physical Review X), and has been named as a National Research Foundation Fellow and to the MIT Technology Review Innovators Under 35 Asia list.

Dr. Randeep Gug, CQF Institute, Managing Director

Dr. Randeep Gug is the Managing Director of the CQF Institute and a lecturer on the Certificate in Quantitative Finance (CQF). Prior to joining Fitch Learning, Randeep worked in a variety of roles. He spent five years working in the Equities division at Salomon Smith Barney and later traded futures and options on the Indian National Stock Exchange (NSE). More recently he has spent time teaching mathematics at all levels. He is a qualified teacher, holds a 1st class honours degree and a PhD for research in semiconductor physics. He is a CQF Alumnus, achieving a distinction on the programme and his current interests are based around improving and promoting the teaching and learning of Quant Finance.

Dr. Taha Jaffer, Head of Wholesale Banking and Treasury AI, Scotiabank

Taha Jaffer is the Head of Wholesale Banking and Treasury AI at Scotiabank. He is the Lead Data Scientist in Scotiabank’s Data Science and Analytics Lab and is responsible for large-scale AI initiatives in Global Treasury, Global Banking & Markets, and Commercial Banking. Before Scotiabank, Taha was a Special Executive Advisor in AI at TD, a Principal at the Carlyle Group, and has held positions in multiple asset management firms with a focus on alternative investments. Taha holds a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering, a Masters in Biomedical Engineering, and a Masters in Mathematical Finance, all from the University of Toronto.
